James Chambury Boats

James’ oil paintings date mainly from the 1970’s and early 1980’s. In his later paintings he used oils like watercolours, creating luminous effects of light in the sky and on the water. The warm tan of the barge’s sail contrasts with the cool tones and harmonious colours of the land and water. James was fascinated by the history of the barges, the old workhorses of the East Anglian coast. He sailed on a Thames barge a few times, and studied plans and models to better understand them.
